Tutorial-painting digital images

January 27, 2010 By: Pamela Category: Card Art, Tutorials

Hello digital masters!

Just thought I’d show you how I used water color pencils, and Triart/Copic markers with Twinkling H2Os to paint two of my digital images. Click any thumbnail for a larger view.

Images were printed with Epson all in one, RX620 on plain white 110# cardstock. I DO have problems with the twinks making the ink run, so I’m very careful with my painting!! I think it has something to do with the papers I’m using…we shall see what the next batch brings!

Not So Faux Oil Painting

Not So Faux Oil Painting by Brenda Loock

for FireCracker Designs by Pamela

Supplies Needed: Stamps, Canvas paper, Oil Pastels, Ink (pads or markers), Aqua brush filled with Baby Oil.

Optional supplies: Spray sealer, or oven, decrative scissors

015_small.jpg

1. Start by stamping your image on the canvas paper. Use any color you like, but matching the color to what you will color with looks best. Let it dry completely.

2. Color in your image using the oil pastels.

3. Move the oil pastel colors around and smooth out using the Aqua brush. If your oil gets too thick blot it off with a paper towel. Continue smoothing out to your liking.

4. Now there is a couple of ways to finish this off. Either put your canvas paper on a metal baking pan and bake for 10-15 minutes at 350. This will dry your oil so you can layer more colors over top using directions 2 and 3. Or if you like it how it is just spray the sealer right over it. I usually put about 4-5 coats of sealer on. Let each coat dry completely, let final coat dry over night. This keeps the oily look to the image, but it will not smear when you finish off your card.

5. On the Rose card I “roughly” cut out my oil pastel colored image with a decortive scissor to give it a ripped look (canvas paper only rips in a straight line). On the Tulip card, I framed the entire stamped/oil colored image to look like an oil painting.

NOTE from the author:

I have bought pads of canvas paper at Micheals and Hobby Lobby in the the artists section (near watercolor paper etc)  The brand name I have bought is Fredrix.  I bought one that was Watercolor Canvas, and one that just says REAL Artist Canvas.  So basically it is just canvas, but is sold like a pad of paper.

I also recently picked up a pad at WalMart that is labeled as Acrylic Mixed Media Paper for Acrylic and Gouache by Canson.  I have not used this paper with the oil tech yet, the look and feel of the paper are different ( I would not bake this) but I am sure it would work for the tech.
